Since Saint Matthias was formed by persons from Christ Church and Canterbury Chapel in 1962, Saint Matthias has offered Tuscaloosa leadership by bringing Headstart to the community in the late 1960's, Hospice in the 1970's, and founded the West Alabama Food Bank in the 1980's. The 1990's have seen the parish live into its promise as Saint Matthias has become a leading center in the Diocese for Christian Formation and Evangelism with such programs as Living Our Baptismal Covenant for adults, EYC for young adults (high school age), teaching for younger children. Saint Matthias developing an Hispanic/Latino ministry in Tuscaloosa and West Alabama with a growing relationship with Todos Los Santos (All Saints) Episcopal Church, Aliceville, Alabama.

The Wellspring Center for Spiritual Formation is now supported by a recently completed labyrinth now found on the spacious parish grounds.

Small group ministries such as The ECW, The Choir, The Men's Fellowship, 20/30 Somethings Group serve to bring this growing, diverse, and inter-generational parish together. Other activities include sponsorship of Boy Scout Pack 43, Boy Scout Troop 43, and Girl Scout  Troop 43.The current church building was completed in 1983 and features an octagonal interior in which the altar (found within a complementary octagonal altar rail) is placed before seven large, clear glass windows. The building and organ invite singing in a relaxed yet quite reverent Rite II worship that features weekly Holy Communion.

Saint Matthias Episcopal Church is part of the Diocese of Alabama which in turn is part of Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America.
